period pause on network traffice on XP pro

dear all,

have a home peer to peer wireless network, 2 xp prop computer
connected to a an orinoco RG1000 wireless router which in turns
connect to a cable modem. I am experiencing a few anormalies within
the boundary of my home network. Some of the symptoms:

1) when one computer accessing a shared folder/drive on another
computer, when it drill down to the subfolder, performance degrade on
the browsing, when over 5 level deep, then it's almost unsable....
problem seem to be relieved by mapping the drive rather than accessing
through my network place

2) when copying files across the network, or doing backup, sometimes
(can't produce repeatedly, but happens 5 times out of ten) the machine
initiating the copying will just drop out of the network
altogether.... reconneting to the network will require unplug/plug the
usb wireless adaptor, or sometimes a reboot

3) also when copying the files to one of the machines, there is a
period pause. If I monitor the network traffice and load, it sits at
only 11% utilised, but there is a 2-5 sec pause out of every minute,
like clock work, and I can't find any reason or any process that cause
that interruption. But it's once a minute for a few seconds. Which
is one of the reason I am supspecting that cause the issue stated in
(2).

any pointers or further information need to help solve this problem
will be greatly appreciated.

david.
