Performance problem with large spreadsheet

Two computers:

Computer1 (desktop):
Pentium D - dual core, 3.2 GHz
2 GB Memory
Windows Vista Ultimate

Computer2 (laptop):
Core 2 duo 2.16 GHz
3 GB Memory
Windows XP SP2

Both computers are running Office 2007 Enterprise.
Both computers have all the Excel options set the same.
Both have copies of the same spreadsheet with 300,000 rows.
On both computers, I start Excel and load this spreadsheet from a local
disk.
On both computers, I delete 1000 rows.
Computer1 completes this function instantly.
Computer2 completes this function in 4.5 minutes - with the CPU pegged the
whole time.

Anyone have any ideas why?

Possible it's related to the OS version, but not likely.

What other software is running on the different machines? Are either running
Outlook? I believe I recall that Outlook has some feature that journals
actions in other Office applications. It's possible this 'feature' is
disabled on the first machine but enabled on the second.

Outlook is installed on both machines but not used for anything. Journaling
of Office apps is not turned on.
 
More test results:

Laptop - Core duo, 2 GHz, Windows Vista, 2 GB - deletes 1000 rows instantly.
Desktop - Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, Windows XP SP2, 1 GB - deletes 1000 rows
instantly.

From these, it appears that we can't blame any properties unique to a
laptop, nor can we blame Windows XP.
