PerfectDisk crashes computer

I just downloaded a trial version of Perfectdisk. It worked fine to
defragment my C drive, which has OS & applications. However, while
trying to defrag Drive G (used exclusively for video files), the system
freezes after about 20 mins., with only 1% progress. I have to disconnect
power in order to reboot. I use the Windows defrag utility & Norton Speed
Disk to defrag this same disk with no problems.

I am running Wind XP Home, P4 1.8, 512 RAM, Drive G is 160GB, 7200 RPM
WD, NTSF

This is the log record leading up to freeze:

8/5/2004 1:08:41 AM Defrag Only Optimization starting for Drive G:\.
8/5/2004 1:10:45 AM Unable to move file G:\Videos\Stars.avi.sfk after

Does anybody know why none of these files were able to be moved when using
perfectdisk,
and why computer completely freezes at this point? TIA

Dale,

This is what I emailed to you on 8/5/04 at approx 5:59 pm...

When PerfectDisk appears to "hang", what fileid does it say that it is
working on. What does it say it is doing to this fileid - moving in, moving
out, optimizing? This can be seen in the lower left corner of the
PerfectDisk screen. If you click on View/Lookup File Name from ID and plug
in this fileid, what filename does it say it is? Is it a large file?

Here is some background on defragmentation and how it actually occurs.

PerfectDisk (like all defragmenters) uses Microsoft's defrag APIs. This
means that PerfectDisk doesn't actually "move" files around. PerfectDisk
requests (via Microsoft's defrag APIs) to have a file "moved" from one set
of logical clusters to another set of logical clusters and it is the file
system itself (FATx/NTFS) that actually performs the file "move" - returning
control back to the defragmenter when finished with a success or failure
status.

When the file system returns a "failed" status, it does not indicate the
reason for the failure - only that it failed.

When the file system returns a "failed" status, PerfectDisk will retry that
same file up to 6 times. If none of those times are successful, then
PerfectDisk will write a message in the log file, skip that file and move on
to the next file.

In your instance, the file system has rejected the file move for these
files. What can you tell me about these files?
