I am running XP Pro SP1. I'm using Perfectdisk (version 6) on a
disk which contains data and also my XP swap file.
(1) USE FILES IN LAYOUT.INI
In Advanced Configuration I have set Perfectdisk to manage the
files as instructed by what it finds in layout.ini in the Prefetch
folder.
When I use this setting, Perfectdisk finds about many files which
it color codes as "boot files"? Streangley, I notice that these
"boot files" include some very large index files created by my
desktop search application. The total size of these "boot files"
is about 6 or 7% of the disk's capacity of 55 GB.
(2) USE PERFECTDISK'S CHOICE
If I set Perfectdisk to choose it's own boot files then it
correctly shows there are none on this data disk.
Unfortunately if I use this Perfectdisk setting (#2 above) on
another drive, my XP system drive, then the boot time is
noticeably worse than using the layout.ini setting (#1 above).
-----
Does this difference happen because Perfectdisk takes the info
about what is or is not a "boot file" from something contained in
layout.ini in the Prefetch folder?
I took a peek at layout.ini but couldn't see any files flagged as
"boot files".
Does anyone know the details of what is happening?
