People are stupid, and that's a damn shame, but it's a fact of life.

Example:

A pal asked me for help because she couldn't update her antivirus
software successfully. She paid 40 bucks for the update online (could
figure that part out, all right), but for some reason couldn't download
and apply the updated software.

I'm going ~insane~, here!

clear any temp folders or update folders that the software created. No error messages at all?....let me guess Norton?

Perhaps I should clarify that I got "the phone call"... I haven't seen
with my own eyes what the hell it is that she is talking about, LOL.

I advised her to close the running programs, and perhaps to uninstall
her old version, before installing the updated version... she had NO
IDEA what I was talking about.

Example:

Just a few days ago I tried to explain to a woman in Staples how to save an
additional $50 instantly on a printer she was about to purchase. She said
she couldn't do it because she didn't have the time! It would have taken her
about an hour, or less, to go home, download the coupon, print the coupon,
and return to the store and apply it to her purchase.

I can't remember when not spending an additional, unnecessary $50 on
something wasn't important to me. I guess some people just have too much
money to be bothered. Must be nice. Hmmm..........where's that lottery
ticket.

THe worst type. If you're both on DSL and using XP there's always
Remote Help.

Not stupid, maybe uninformed. Do us a favor and don't become a
teacher (you probably would not be too good at it).

Hmm. Similarly, you perhaps should not become a diplomat.

Speaking of anti-virus, I use PC-Cillin, m'self.

I run Debian, http://knopper.net/knoppix from a CDROM to test new
systems, or to approve any store systems, BEFORE PURCHASE!!!

Then, I do a hard drive installation... The dual boot lets anyone running
any MS product, boot up into Linux instead, to check that the system does
work! And, it allows the repair of file systems, and has proven to be
virus and w0rm proof!

If you want to mess with NTFS file systems, SUSE Linux permits read/write
with zero errors... But, it IS your RIGHT to remain un-educated...

I choose Liberty, FREEDOM, and the use of OPEN SOURCE software...

its also your right to use something thats easy enough to understand for the average person, so that you would actually get
something done with your machine besides writing kernals and trying to get software to work with your oS.

Really? :) You mean I could read/write to my NTFS windows partitions
from my SuSE Linux partition? :) Since when? :)

You mean YOU, yourself picked up the phone with out screening (weeding out
the sales, crank and dumb shit calls) through the machine first??? You get
no sympathy here! You made your own bed now you must lay in it.

I thought you were going to tell us they had no problem paying $40 for this
"upgrade" but then didn't want to pay you $40 for fixing it! I had a
neighbor who spent $300+ on networking hardware but didn't want to pay me
$25 to set it up. He spent $450 on 3 copies of XP convinced that was his
problem only to finally pay me the $25 to look at it and I found he had
been sold crossover cables instead of regular ones! :)

Uuuhhhh ... Since at least NT 4.0 days.

Google for "NTFS Password Reset Diskette" for one such app, based on
a Linux boot diskette.

I THINK Kernel 2.2 had NTFS support in the kernel, but I'm not sure
(not being a Linux guru ... )

Just curious. Is there some reason *you* couldn't download and print out
the coupon and give it to her? And call it public relations? Or is that
against store policy?

Ummm...........I wouldn't know about Staples store policy in that
regard.........I don't work there! I was simply a customer trying to help
another customer get a better deal on a planned purchase.

*IF* I had a copy of the coupon with me at the time I would have just given
it to her.......but I didn't, so I explained to her how to get
one........but she couldn't be bothered!
