Pending Windows Updates not shown

Running Windows XP Pro, I have Windows Update set to download fixes but
let me choose when to install. Normally, I will see the shield icon in
the system tray when updates are available.

When I shut the system down, it is now asking me whether to install
pending updates. But the shield icon is not available in the system
tray, so I have no way to check what updates Windows wants to install.

This is happening on two different Windows XP Pro machines.

What happened to the shield icon and how do I get it back so I can find
out what these pending updates are?

Thanks!

Incorrect. You have *Automatic* Update set . . . .

Learn how to patch your OS without relying on Automatic Update, that
only adds another layer of code to screw up the patching process.

No, I do not have automatic update set. Control Panel->Automatic
Updates confirms that system is set to download and ask.

I do not want updates applied without my approval, so do not want them
applied automatically.

There is anecdotal evidence in posts to MS newsgroups that the behavior you
describe is happening with one or both of the two updates "pushed" this week
(900485 & 905474). We don't know why.

That is NOT Windows Update. That is as the title says, "Automatic
Updates."

Windows Update is reached via Internet Explorer.

Then stop using the buggy piece of crap. Read the link I gave you and
learn how to take control of patching your OS yourself.

Thank you. I appreciate the information.

fwiw, the problem seems to have corrected itself today.
