pcmcia modem problem

I have a Viking pcmcia modem installed and when I try to connect to the Internet I get a window stating "could not detect modem". When I go to system/hardware/device manager and try "query modem" I get a message "modem does not respond" The device manager shows no conflicts, the modem driver appears to be loaded properly as does the pcmcia slot drivers. When I remove the card it is acknowledged by XP. When I reinstall XP acknowledges it is new hardware. Modem is calling port 3. and dial-up is also calling out port 3. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Either the card is fried or can not work on your machine (because of irq conflict or whatever).
Consider getting another modem.

I'm actually dealing with the same issue here.

The laptop was upgraded with XPSP1 from NT4. The modem worked fine o
the prior O.S, but not on XP. You can take the modem and put it in an
other laptop and it will be fine. If you get any modem and put it int
this laptop it will not work.
So far, I've seen only a few other posts on the web and this is wha
they've said:

1> Possibly the pcmcia drivers need to be updated or backreved. (Min
is using C:\windows\system32\drivers\pcmcia.sys and the only other on
available is on non-SP1 XP cd. I can't seem to overwrite that file t
test with.

2> Someone specified their may be an issue with the virtual COM por
thats already in use. Under device manager, click on the properties o
the COM port and then Advanced and change the number to the In Us
number and then change it back. See if that makes a difference.

3> There may be an issue with the serial.sys file.

4> This dell has a Texas Instruments Cardbus controller and I'm tryin
to find drivers for it specifically, but I can't.

Hopefully that helps.
