Most modems do require some form of installation and setup. The software
is usually found on the cdrom or diskette that ships with the modem. If
the modem is built into the motherboard, then these files are usually
installed from the motherboard cdrom. Changing an ISP does not usually
require making hardware changes or updates other than the settings to
connect with the new ISP.

pci indicates the "bus"

check the back of your computer for rj-11 jacks (same shape, but smaller
than the network connector) it could be in a pci slot (and easily
removable) or it could be on the motherboard.

As for the install, if you are not using it and it doesn't install from
the default windows drivers, somewhere during the process you should be
able to say that you don't want it to be installed (can't remember) so
that it will stop coming up.
