PCI device not there

Every time I log on Windows detects a new hardware device
but I have not installed any hardware.

If I try to install this non-existent hardware a driver
cannot be found. All I can find out about this "hardware"
is that it is a PCI device in slot 4(?) and a PNP device
Id, which to me is a random string of characters.

Any ideas why XP tries to install hardware that doesn't
exist?

Possibly an on-board device built into your MB and enabled. This could be
anything from sound to LAN or even modem on some boards. These devices do
share IRQs with PCI slots and virtually all boards so can be seen as PCI
devices.

Your MB manual may tell you if an on-board device shares a PCI slot 4.

FWIW,
Len
