PC100 doesn't recognise new PC133 memory

Gary Jackson

I've just installed two sticks of PC133 memory in my 100mhz system, in
slots one and three. Slot two has the old stick of PC100.

It is not recognising the new sticks. When I boot up, it only says
"SDRAM at 2", as opposed to 1,2,3.

BIOS confirms only 128mb (the PC100) of memory.
Any ideas what I've done wrong?

Thanks

Gary

Sometimes you need to place the modules in a specific order for them to
clock down. Try putting the PC100 in slot 1 first, and if that doesn't
work, try some other orders. For me, some motherboard chipsets will clock
down DIMMs placed in any order, but some PC100 boards won't accept PC133
whatever I do. If you still have troubles, try asking on
uk.adverts.computer if anyone wants to swap your DIMMs for PC100, or put
them up on eBay and buy some PC100 DIMMs from there at the same time.

Try the manufacturer of the memory, sometimes they have a FAQ and can answer
your question.

100MHz system?
This is a pentium 1 or something else?
We need specifics.

Most likely you bought the newer, higher density memory which is too high
a density for your motherboard to support. The motherboard chipset
dictates max density support, so you'll need to provide that info.

I read on one of the memory manufacturer's websites a while back that
some PC133 is backwards compatible with PC100 and some isn't.

Thanks for all the replies. I have now re-installed the two original
sticks but only one slot is being recognised. They were both fine
before.

How hard do you have to push these things to connect them? All the
side clips are in place.

My local Staples store has a sign posted by their PNY and Kingston memory
saying that their PC133 memory is no longer backwards compatible with PC100
memory.

I had that happen on an old IBM PS/1. Suddenly, two of the four slots
stopped working. No amount of juggling old and new memory around the
slots would get the two slots working. Have you tried cleaning the
contacts with a little alcohol? Blowing out the empty slots with
canned air? Swapping the original memory between the slots?
