PC wont shut down

The other day when I went to shut down my XP PC it just kept saying windows
is closing down but it did'nt, so I had to turn it off at the socket. Later
it restarted as normal no error messages or auto scan disk. Now it does shut
down but takes awhile doing so. All updates are loaded.

Try running scandisk (chkdsk) using the instructions on this page :
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html

You want to use the /f and /r parameters as laid out there.
