PC turns on after complete shutdown

This problem does not occur every time the PC shuts down, however it has been
happening on a weekly basis since we upgraded the hardware. Below is detail
of what has been happening:

I click the 'start' menu, then 'Turn Off Computer' and select the red button
(Turn Off). The computer then goes through the process of shutting down and
logging off - we have two user accounts - and the actual computer shuts down
and is silent.

However, after several minutes, the computer will turn itself back on and be
back at the Welcome Screen of Windows XP with both user accounts. I am at a
loss to explain why it has done this on several occasions and thought it
would be best to post a message here.

In regards to the specs of the PC, I am running Windows XP Professional and
it has been updated to SP2. The main hardware is a Intel Celeron 2.8 ghz CPU,
512 mb of DDR Ram (256mb is from the original computer and another 256mb was
added when upgraded), 80gb HDD, 128mb Video Card and 52x CD-Rom Drive.

If anybody could recommend any diagnostics or reports I should run on the
computer when it is being shut-down or booted up it would be appreciated. I
am rather new to Windows XP and PC's as I have been using Apple Mac's with
Mac OSX for quite some time.

I look forward to hearing any replies, if you require any further
information please reply to this topic and I will be more than happy to
assist.

Hello Shaun,

Is this pc in a network, or is it a stand-alone?

Here are some basic tips: Right-Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Press the settings button.
In System failure section, turn off (un-check) Automatically restart. Apply change.

Have you checked your Power Management settings?
Get into Control Panel----Power Management---and turn on APM ---Advanced Power Management .

If the computer is off for several minutes before restarting itself then go
into the BIOS and look for something call Wake On Lan (Power up on LAN) or
something very similar. Ensure this feature is disabled. Refer to your
computer/motherboard manual on how to gain access to the BIOS.
