Hello, I have a new Winxp home laptop. I have a desktop win xp at my
business. when i take the laptop to work, i want to be able to use the LT to
open files that are on my desktop (which has all my business/work files)
even if the 2 pc's are only inches apart, or even 20 feet-At work, i use
DSL.
Is this what is called networking?? what do I enable on the LT & desktop
pc's to make this happen?
Also, do i need to use a special program??
Also, what is the maximum distance that i can go between the 2 pc's? For
exam, can i accomplish th same thing if I am at home with my LT (15 miles
away from the desktop)?
Sorry there are alot of questions. But, it has happened that I have been
home & needed a clients file that is at my work, & i have to wait til I get
there to open in from the desktop. How conveninet it would be to be @ home,
and get files from work.
Thank you

The scenario you outline where you're using the laptop at the
office is indeed "networking". You would probably want to
purchase a wireless router and install it between the DSL modem
and your computers.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to post your
networking question to this newsgroup,

Windows XP Networking

Accessing your office computer from home is a much more
complicated process. If the desktop is running Windows XP
Professional you can use a feature called Remote Desktop. If it
is running XP Home Edition then you could use a program such as
UltraVNC or www.logmein.com.

Once again, you might want to post a question on this topic to
this newsgroup,

Windows XP Working Remotely

If you value your time, you might want to consider hiring a
professional to set up your network and remote access.

Good luck
