PC swithes off for no reason

I have this PC at work that appears to be runnign fine then for no reason
just switches itself off and the power button becomes inactive even though
its showing an orange light like it was on stand by mode, have to actually
pull the power supply lead out the back, Why does it do this? Is it a PSU
issue, CPU over heat issue, could it jus be dusty inside or something? Can
anyone shed some light please?

Thanks folks

Hi,

And you're sure it's not just in hibernate mode? Does depressing and holding
the power switch in for 10 seconds do anything? If it does (it should turn
it off actually), then I suspect the system is going into hibernate and then
is not able to come out. Disabling it in the Control Panel/Power Options
should resolve that. If not, then it could be any of the things you
mentioned. Cleaning out the dust bunnies and checking for proper fan
operation is a good first step, but if there is a hardware issue you need to
have a tech look at it and replace the faulty component(s).

Bouncing Otter,

These are the same symptoms I had when my power supply went bad. It shut off
for no reason for about a week, then finally wouldn't turn on with only the
orange light on appearing.

As an aside. Modern power buttons you have to keep pressed in for 5
seconds to turn the pc off.

Unless someone chanced the BIOS setting. :-(

My first guess would be an over heating condition -- when it
reaches the set point it shuts off. Pop the cover off and make
sure that a) it is not full of dust/lint/etc and b) the fans that
should be running are running.
