pc slow for no reason...

I've a pc recently bought. WinXP, 2.9ghz pentium4, 512 memory, 120gb HD
(divided into 2). I've just scanned for virus (virus database updated), 99%
defragged, no adwares detected (ad remover updated).

Since I bought it, it keeps getting slow all the time. I just don't know
what is it that's making it go slow. Could anyone tell me what might that be?

Thanx a lot!

run msconfig and take unneeded apps out of startup...
chances are you only need your virus checker and firewall in startup

How much free space in each partition?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

How did you measure this slowness? Boot time, application load time,
browser page loading, database queries, speadsheet calculation? Or is
it just a feeling? What are you comparing this machine to? Man, in
terms of the components you listed, you have a home user's super
computer. How fast do you want the machine to be?

Hi! I know the machine I bought. I'm not a layman in these things, that's why
I bought this specific machine.

It doesn't take much time booting. But applications might always get stuck
for several minutes before fully loading. I've had a computer like this
before, but it wasn't mine, so that's why I bought this one, which exceeds
the other one in features. But it's slower! It's impossible, especially
because it has only weeks of usage.

Thanx!!
