PC sleeps when inactive but all power saver settings turned off

I have turned off all the power saver settings on my XP machine but I
still can't stop the PC from sleeping when it's inactive. If I leave
it for about 20 minutes it acts frozen when I return and I have to
wait a good few minutes for it to spring back to life. It doesn't
crash though. Assuming I had a conflict problem I have tried various
combinations of stopping certain software from loading but none seem
to work. I also know that during these periods of inactivity stuff
that should run in the background just doesn't (e.g. p2p apps). I
should also point out that the PC does crash (always) when turned back
on after being switched off for a while - it needs to "warm up" so to
speak. I think this is linked to a memory issue judging by the stop
errors so I wonder whether these two problems are related? I'm tempted
to go and buy some new memory and see if that fixes it but is there
some XP trick I should try first?

A sleeping computer springs back to life almost immediately, when call to do
so. Therefore, your computer is NOT sleeping. It has experienced a crash of
some background program/service that was running.

OK - I guess I meant "sleep" in the general sense - not the XP sleep
function as such. Maybe I should have said "stands still" because
thats what it does! I have been running some software which
automatically moves the mouse every 10 seconds. With this turned on
the problem doesn't occur but it is a clumsy solution. Any ideas would
be much appreciated.

A long shot, but if you can, swap your memory cards. I.E. Put the card
in socket1 into the 2 socket. and vice versa
