PC random "power failures"

Hello.

I have 2 PCs in my house and occasionally they switch off and restart. It
has happened at different times, even when the PC is not doing anything. It
is really random, and doesnt happen very often. I call it a power failure
because the PC just turns off, and starts up again.

Both run win xp home SP2, in different parts of the house using surge
protectors, latest drivers. I have even changed the psu in one PC, from 300
to 350W, but it happened again yesterday.

The event viewer doesnt show anything out of the ordinary. Is there any
other way to check to see what was running or tried to run before the PC
turns off?

The only thing that is slightly strange is that event viewer showed, on one
PC, trying to sync with windows time, but i have zonealarm so it didnt
connect, just before the power failure. When the power cut on the pc happened
nothing else in the room, e.g. lights, TV etc, flickered at all.

this is quite strange as it has happened to both PCs. I havent checked the
temp of the CPUs after the power failure yet. The only thing could be
something to do with the electricity supply in the house, but as i said the
lights or tv wasnt effected.

hope someone may have an idea...

Since it happens to both PCs in different parts of the house, it must have
something to do with the quality of power being delivered to them either from
the mains or due to a fault with the surge protectors.

I would try running them for a while without the surge protectors.

Guessing, but it is possible the computer is downloading
system software, which it installs, then reboots itself to
finish the installation.

check with Microsoft or other software setups to see if you
are set up for "Automatic downloads/installs."

If your computer seems to be running fine, I wouldn't worry
about it.

If you don't want this happening, change the "Automatic
Download" setting so that the installer must notify you
before installing the software.

I hear my computer rebooting and re-setting every few days
when I'm sleeping. I feel good when I hear those noises,
because that's what I've set it up to do.

Just because you and I need downtime, doesn't mean the
computer must remain idle at those times.
