pc problems - help me please this thing driving me crazy

My pc is only new machine using windows xp 2000. I have scanned the machine
for virus and cleaned all the disk space for past two days ran various programs.
The machine is so so so slow when yuo start it up and try to open programs its takes forever to open and then you see the outline and white boxes.....
I have tried everything i can think off i would be extremely greatful any suggestions
of what to do to make the machine quicker as not always like this just recently.

Have you defragged your hard drive and have you run Scandisk?
