Pc hibernates while in use

my pc 'hibernates' while im using it, and then the only way to get it working
again is by resetting it. The hard drives and fan remain running but nothing
is operational. The screen light remains green and does not turn orange.

P4 2.4, 1 gig of ram.

Please assist.

Sounds like it's crashing rather than hibernating. Try running a chkdsk /
defrag etc on the drive.

That's not hibernation that's a hardware problem.
Check that all the fans are working and that the ventilation holes are not
blocked.
Then check the RAM using a memory test program.

Thanks guys for the response - I ran windows memory checker and chkdsk and
all ok, Im out of ideas. My screen card drivers are up to date Geforce
400MX. All i can imagine is to remove my covers and see if the heat helps...
Otherwise Im gonna have to try get a new pc, on a student budget... I also
have set all my hibernation and sleep settings to NEVER.

Any other suggestions?

Just the obvious ones of checking all the cables, cards, heat sinks are
fitted correctly.

I've got a vague recollection about a similar sounding problem a while back,
where someone had a similar problem and resolved it with a bios update -
which isn't something you do lightly (do it wrong and your PC's a gonna) -
but it may be worth looking into.

Updating the BIOS isn't as hard as it used to be, when one had go create a
bootable floppy. However it pays to read very carefully the instructions on
updating from the mfg of the computer or motherboard. Some say that it
should only be done with the computer hooked to a battery backup power
source. That seems to me to be overkill, but I'd never do it during a
thunderstorm. :)

In Dec 06 I bought a Gateway laptop loaded with XP that was Vista compatible
and included a free upgrade to Vista after it was released. Having visited
Gateway's download site for my model, I was aware that there was a BIOS
upgrade for Vista, and I used this before installing Vista. Interestingly,
nowhere in the written instructions that came with the Vista upgrade kit was
the BIOS upgrade mentioned, even though the website specifically stated that
it was to make the computer compatible with Vista.

So, I wonder if some of those who have had trouble with their computers
after upgrading from XP to Vista should go back to their mfg's site to see
if a BIOS upgrade is available.
