PC hangs repeatedly esp when connected to internet

My PC hangs very very frequentlyt when connected to the
internet, less so when not connected. I'm running XP on
256 meg RAM. What's most likely to be the culprit or
solution?

Could be the modem driver, I had a similar problem and when I replaced the
modem driver that came with the modem (a creative) with the generic driver
it cleared right up....

Do you have automatic updates enabled or a virus program
that automatically downloads updates? These could slow
your machine down, although having can save you from virus
attacks.
