PC hangs during win xp installation

I have a compaq presario 3555 p3, 500 mhz, w/ 128 MB and
10 GB HD...pre-loaded with Win 98. I am trying to install
win XP Pro onto it (licensed copy). However, whenever it
gets to the installing win xp stage/installing devices,
the computer goes to black-screen and just hangs. I've
tried restarting the install to no avail. Any ideas?

did you run the checkupgradeonly option

it looks like a hardware conflict or hardware driver
conflict ... also this can happen if your system is
CLOCKED the set up process hammers the processor and
memory....

Did you run the compatibility to see if the HW is compatible with XP?

yes, i ran the checkupgradeonly otion and there were no
issues reported.

Ran into a very similar problem myself, and updating my BIOS fixed it.
