PC hangs during start-up

My daughter's pc won't start-up this morning. It going through the normal
procedure but when it gets to the blue-screen with the MS windows XP logo,
the login boxes do not come up and it just hangs there. Anyone seen this and
have any idea how to get it to complete the boot-up procedure? We have tried
pressing the reset button and re-starting it, but it hangs at the same stage
each time.

Thanks,
Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Have you tried Safe mode yet? Does it work there?

How to start in Safe mode:
http://www.rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Safe mode

If so, then clean up the boot:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP [Q310560]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310560

You might also try safe mode with networking, where you can download,
install, and update these and run full system scans:

AdawareII www.lavasoft.de
Spybot www.safer-networking.org

From MVP Richard Harper on cleaning up malware infested systems:
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

This one can help you avoid these programs from being installed in the first
place:
Spyware Blaster: www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Rick,

Thanks for your pointers. They were very helpful. I think I am nearly
sorted but I still have one issue that concerns me. When I first login, a
pop-up appears entitled "Runner Error" with the following message "Invalid
BackWeb version id 6.1.4.36-8876480L"

Any idea what this is, and how to get rid of it?

Thanks,
Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Run msconfig and check the startup tab, you will usually find backweb there.
