PC freezes after reboot - until memory stick is moved to another slot - whats going on?!

ok heres a wierd one!

my friend has a homebuilt PC (fatal1ty-f-i90hd mobo) with 1GB stick of
DDR2 ram (800). Now the system works fine until it is rebooted or
switched off. Then it hangs as windows is loading (mup.sys is the
latest thing spotted in safe mode). This will keep happening no
matter what - UNTIL the memory is phsyically moved to another slot!!

Then it works again - until the next reboot. totally bizarre - anyone
ever seen this?

I think moving the memory forces an ESCD update as it shows a message
reporting this after the memory is moved. Does this indicate an issue
with the BIOS? Can an ESCD update be forced every boot?

cheers :D

You can use memtest86 to test the memory. Download the ISO file and burn
it to a bootable CD.

Contrary to JAD the troll, you can validly test hardware in your system
without removing it if you are looking for a positive result.

Good luck and have fun.

Try going into the BIOS after changing memory, then hitting "SAVE and
Exit" to save your current memory configuration.

You might try experimenting with the "Plug and Play Aware OS" setting
in your BIOS setup. AIUI, if this option is set to "No", then the BIOS
will attempt to assign resources to the various devices. Otherwise, if
it is set to "Yes", then the BIOS will leave it up to Windows.

Alternatively, you may be able to prevent Windows from modifying the
ESCD table. In Win9x go to Device Manager, System Devices, Plug and
Play BIOS, Properties, settings, and check the box marked "Disable
NVRAM/ESCD updates".
