PC dies for no apparent reason

In the last three days, my pc has just died while I am working. It can be
while on internet, the computer, or e-mail. It just dies and reboots by
itself. Only thing I have done recently is downloaded Windows Exployer 8 Beta
and upgraded to 2009 Norton.
Am using XP oper system. What do you guys think.

In xp,open event viewer,scroll to the event/warning,R.click,properties,get
detailed info on the crash...Also,click on the url in it,this opens kb
help/support,
usually with a fix for it.

I think people frequenting a group for supporting the IE 8 Beta MIGHT be
able to offer advice, which may include turning off the "Feature" of
Windows XP to restart in response to certain program faults. Allowing
the system might permit you to see a pop-up that offers clues about the
cause of the problem. there might be some clues in the event viewer too.

Have you tried reverting back to the version you were using before
installing the BETA TEST version? Sometimes things like that are the
reason the version hasn't been released for normal use.

Than again, it might be a problem that could be resolved by advice you
can obtain in a Norton oriented group or retreating back to the earlier
version of Norton.

Four points:

1. If your computer is restarting spontaneously, you are presumably
blue-screening, and you are set to the default of rebooting whenever
that happens. It's a poor default setting and you should change it.
Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties. On the Advanced tab,
click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System failure,
uncheck the box "Automatically restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get
the blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those
details for more help.

2. This problem is far more often caused by a hardware problem than a
software one.

3. Despite what I say in number 2 above, since you are running beta
software, that may well be the cause. I recommend that you never run
beta products unless you have an extra computer to do it on, and one
that you don't mind if the beta software crashes it or causes other
significant problems.

4. I am very much against Norton anything. It is typically the worst
choice of software available to do what it does, and can often cause
significant problems. I'm not claiming that it's necessarily the cause
of the problems you describe, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out.

Thanks guys, I just replaced 8 with 7, which I had before. I will just have
to wait till tomorrow to see if I still get the shutdowns. I also unchecked
the "Automatical Restart. Still have the Norton 2009. Anyway, I guess it is
now trial and error. thanks again.

The system is crashing, likely because of the "only things" you installed.

Turn off the "automatic reboot on crash" function or look in the System
Event Logs for an indication of where the crash is occurring.
