PC automatically reconnects to web

Following a recent update to internet expolorer via Windows Update I find
that my PC reconnects to my broadband service just moments after I have
disconnected.

I have checked the Internet Properties>Connections settings and changed this
back to Never Dial a Connection but the same behaviour persists. Can anyone
suggest a cure or explain why my PC now does this?

It's not a big Issue I know but I like to feel in control of my machine.

Broadband connections do not normally use "DIAL-UP" connections. Depending
on the exact type of service, you may already have a "semi-perminate"
connection.

What type of Broadband coonection are you using? If you are using a "PPPoE"
type connection, this is the "only" version of broadband connection that can
be set as a "dial-up". DHCP or perminate IP style connection are
"always-on".

Yves, where do I look to check what type of connection I have. I went to
the Start menu and clicked on Connect to> My Broadband Connection>Details and
the Server type was listed as PPP. Is this the same as PPPoE. Also, why
the change in behaviour? It used to disconnect and stay disconnected before
the update.

Kurt, I know what you mean generally! What do you mean by PA though?

Just the technology MS uses to limit what you can do with your copy of
XP.

Product Activation.

Product Activation does not place a "limit" on what you can do! It limits
you to only installing this XP license on ONE PC.

PPP = (P)oint to (P)oint (P)rotocol

PPPoE = (P)oint to (P)oint (P)rotocol (o)ver (E)thernet

Do you:
1) have a username and password to log on to your ISP service?

2) check to see what programs have "auto-started" in to Windows XP?

Sure does. Try changing six hardware components.

Yves, Thanks for the info and yes I have a password and username to log
onto my ISP. The only program in the startup menu is Office Startup
-although I'm not sure why that is there, is that the culprit? It didn't
seem to be an issue a week ago.
