Pc Answers phone calls

When i leave my pc switched on but not connected to the internet when
someone rings the computer connects to the internet very weird!and the
person on the other end of the phone hears a fax machine noise but my fax
machine in unpluged!

i'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup.

Hope someone can help

Richard,

Most likely a third party fax program or Windows XP fax service is running
in the background.

Try to disable or configure the fax service properly.
 
You have some type of fax software set to answer the phone. Set the
properties of the fax software to not automatically answer the phone.
