Hi Everyone

My system above with the orig w98 os would not come up, even with th
recovery cd's. I had originally planned to install W2k pro in th
future, but that got sped up yesterday. I did NOT format the driv
first, as I have data that I need to offload that i
"underneath" the new OS (picture files, other stuff), bu
when I did the install, my cd burner did not get picked up during th
install process. W2K just sees it as a regular cd drive. The box i
now essentially a dual boot setup at the moment, but W98 will onl
run in safety mode, and I cannot burn any cd's at all. Does anyon
have any recommendations on the best way to remove my data file
other than trying to hunt/peck and reconfig the cd drive with bran
XX burner software from the web? A virus wrecked my life yesterda
and this is where I am today. AV protection not being in place was m
fault hard lesson learned. thank

I see three possible choices...

1. Buy a new CD burner. They can be had real cheap these days.

2. Buy a second HD (whatever's on sale) and copy your important files to
that for safe keeping. you don't mention how big your current HD is, but you
can buy 80gig drives pretty cheap these days, depending on rebates or not,
they can be had for $50 with no rebates, probably less with a rebate. Might
be worth it it terms of ease and speed.

3. But a USB memory stick (if your HP has a USB port), copy some file to it,
take it to another system, empty the USB stick onto the other system, go
back fill it up again and repeat as neccessary.

that should not matter...
just install your CD burning software from win2k
and hopefully it will work
