How do you connect to the Internet? Broadband? Dialup? What hardware is
used to connect?

Here are some things to try. Make one change at a time, testing after
each change.

1. Change out the flat cable that goes from the modem to the telephone
jack.

2. Try a different phone jack.

3. What is running in the background? Did your Internet connection ever
work properly? If so, what changed? Add any hardware or software?

4. Update the modem drivers. Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get
them from:

a. The card mftr.'s website; OR
b. The motherboard mftr.'s website if onboard video; OR
c. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them
back:

5. Swap out the modem for a known-working one.
