Pasting text with track changes

I've looked through the forum posts on pasting text with revisions into a new
document, and I've got it that I need to have Track Changes turned OFF in
both documents to make it work.

So I've got my revised text pasted into my new document, and all the track
changes are visible...the problem is that I can't make it display deletions
in balloons, which for this particular document I really need. Under Show >
Balloons, all the options are grayed out.

Is there any way to get around this? I've got two halves of a large document
that two different editors have been working on, and at this point I'm
thinking I'm just going to have to use Insert > File to merge them instead of
copying and pasting.

(1) Are any of the Track Changes options (including Insertions,
Deletions, Formatting, Comments) marked to be displayed in balloons
(as opposed to underline, strikethrough, etc.)? If not, there would be
nothing for the Show > Balloons command to show. (2) What's wrong with
using Insert > File? Seems like it would be quicker and more reliable
than Copy/Pasting stretches of text.
