pasted images appear as place holders in Outlook 2003 (since updatingform IE6 to IE7)

(Take two. I published this a while ago and nobody could answer)

Hi,

Since we migrated our environment from IE6 to IE7, many users have
complained about not being able to see the images they copy/paste
between Outlook messages.

Our environment: Win XP SP2 + Office 2003 SP2/SP3

Steps for reproducing the problem:
-in Outlook 2003, double-clic a message containing an embedded image,
right-click the image and select COPY
-close the message, create a new message and paste in the body of the
message: a place holder with a red cross is pasted instead of the image

Problem does not appear if any of these conditions is met:
-rollback to IE6 (we won't do this)
-upgrade to Office 2007 (we can't do this)
-the original window (containing the embedded image) stays open when
pasting (few users do that)
-the read pane is open (many users dislike the reading pane and
deactivate it)
-Word is the default email editor (it is not the case in our company)

The last three points are workarounds, not solutions. We have 2000+
users, I am looking for a definitive fix.

Any idea?

Turn on the clipboard viewer - does the image stay on the clipboard when you
close and open message forms?
Is the image an attachment or downloaded content?
downloaded content: <img src="http://where-ever.com/image.jpg">
attachment - no http path: <img src="image.jp"> or <img src="cid:image.jpg">

Hi Diane,

Yes, the image stays on the clipboard.

The image is a printscreen that was originally pasted directly into a
message. I made several tests, and the image format doesn't seem to
matter (bitmap, jpeg,gif...), they all end up with blank rectangle with
a tiny red cross in the upper left corner.

If I open the very same message on a pc with IE6, no problem, it can be
pasted normally.

It's happening due to security settings in IE and how Outlook handles
attachments in the securetemp folder. I'm surprised that it stays on the
clipboard but doesn't paste. If they send it with the red x, what does the
recipient get?

The recipient gets a blank rectangle with a red cross in the upper left
corner. However, areference also appears next to the red cross, in the
form of "cid:[email protected]"

If you are right, then I should be able to correct the problem by
modifying IE7 security settings, but which ones? But then how come I
don't have the problem with Office 2007?

Regards,

Lo
