Paste affecting headers and footer paragraph settings

Hi,

In Word 2007 I have been having an irritating problem which I can't seem to
fix. When I paste text from another document to one with my company header
and footer (both tables by the way), Word decides to add a space after all
the text in the headers. This even happens when I paste as unformatted text.
It's not really the biggest problem in the world and can easily be fixed,
it's just really annoying.

Once I have readjusted the paragraph settings everything is fine, but still
.. . .

Anyone out there know of how I can stop this?

I can't seem to replicate what you're doing. I'm not sure I understand. Is
this correct?

You're pasting a table from one document to another, into the document's
header. Are you saying that paragraph spacing (After) is being added in the
cells??

What style is being used? Does the style in the receiving document have its
paragraph spacing defined so that there is After spacing? If so, then the
solution would be to change the default formatting for that style so that
After spacing is 0, rather than 6, 10, 12, or whatever it might be.

A table in the header (as anywhere else) will be followed by an empty
paragraph.

I thought about that when I tried to replicate. But, CF says "Once I have
readjusted the paragraph settings everything is fine" which leads me to
think that if it can be solved with "paragraph settings," then there's
probably a solution to be had by changing the default paragraph settings in
the style that resides in the receiving document.

It's also the case that, even if there is no table involved, if you paste
content into a header/footer, no matter how carefully you have copied the
text *without* a paragraph mark, and no matter how carefully you select the
header/footer paragraph before pasting (assuming that the pasted text will
overwrite the selected paragraph mark), you still always get an extra, empty
paragraph below the pasted text. I consider this anomalous (i.e., a bug) and
specifically warn about it (IIRC) in
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm. I don't know whether
that's relevant here or not, though.

Thanks for the discussion,

To clarify the tables in the header and footer are part of a template. Once
opened everything is how I want it.

When I come to paste any text in to the document (anywhere in the document)
the paragraph settings inside the header and footer tables changes.

Any more advise?

Hi again,

Again, I may need to clarify a bit better - please bear with me.

The header and footer is affected when I paste text into the main body of
text - i.e not into the header or footer. A the spacing after each line in
the table increases from the desired 0pt to 6pt.

This is beginning to sound like a document corruption problem. Is my
understanding correct that if you paste ANY text (not just a table) anywhere
in the document, the paragraph formatting in tables contained in the header
and footer changes?

Does this happen even if you (for example) copy/paste text that originates
inside that document? I.e., does only pasted text from other documents cause
the problem, or does pasted text from inside that document cause the problem
as well?

What style(s) are being used inside the header and footer? Are any of those
styles set to Automatically Update? (Position the insertion point in the
part of the table where the problem occurs, and press Ctrl+Shift+S. Click
Modify... and see if the Automatically Update option is selected.)

Does this happen in a brand new document (where you create tables in the
header/footer afresh, rather than based on that possibly-corrupt document)?

Is the document in .doc or .docx format?
