My friend at work forgot his password and cannot log onto his computer.

He is running Windows vista home premium on a Compaq laptop.

We tried to go into the safe mode but the only screen we get is his password
sign on screen. Even during boot we pressed f8 key but the password screen
came up. He is hoping someone has an idea or answer so he can avoid taking
it into get looked at and paying money.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

No one in this newsgroup can help with a lost password. The normal
procedure is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the Windows
operating system.

I was afraid that was going to be the answer. Thank you for your help and I
will pass it on to my friend.

Download this, burn a cd, boot from that CD which is a minimal version
of Linux and use the default settings. You may have to unlock the
existing password but it works and is a lot quicker than reinstalling.

Please post back if you find the solution, it helps others. Thanks.

Tell your friend (at WORK) to see the system admin, or his immediate
supervisor to have them solve the problem.

If it is a work computer it is not his problem. It is a company problem.
Unless, of course, it is a work computer that is now in his private
possession at home. Then he can't very well ask the company for assistance.

Don't listen to these idiots. Yes, you can easily recover your Windoze
password- using Linux. It's so easy M$ doesn't want you to know. But here's
what to do:

1. Create a bootable USB disk with Linux on it (google it)

2. Install John the Ripper on the boot disk free partition (google it)

3. Boot your friend's laptop with the Linux disk. Linux does not give a
rat's crap about Microsoft's security- you will be able to access the entire
hard drive, every single file including...

4. Your password files. Copy these (again, google if you don't know the
location) to the boot disk.

5. Run John on the password files. John will (correctly) guess the password
by analyzing the hash.

6. There you go! Reboot to windows and enter your password. Contact me for
more info!

I believe there are several Linux Live CDs that can reset the password.

Unfortunately my friend decided to format his hard drive before I got to
work today and try the various solutions. Again a big THANK YOU!!
