How can I password protect a folder containing files as compared to passwording the individual files in a folder? The zip file option seems to be capable for passwording the files in a zip folder, but not the folder itself. Will NTFS allow passwording the folder

Password encryption on files and folders is weak and xp (nt based systems)
do not use it anymore. In xp you use permissions and security to allow or
deny users access to the folder.
In xp pro you first have to turn simple file sharing off:
open explorer: tools, folder options, view tab, uncheck: use simple file
sharing.
Then right click the folder, properties, security tab, set allow or deny
access for users as you like.
(in xp home , boot to safe mode, then right click the folder..... then same
as above)

NTFS works by defining access rights of different users to files and
folders; not passwords at all. You would need *some* third party
method.
