password protecting File Sharing

i have two computers - computera and computerb. computerb can access
folders on computera by doing \\computera\folder. what i want to do
is make computerb require a password to access the folder.

on computera, i disable simple file sharing and click on the
permissions button. i delete the "Everyone" and add the admin
username. i then try to access \\computera\folder from computerb and
get an access denied message and that's it. i'm not prompted for a
password (or username) at all. i do "Administrators" and I get the
same thing. so what am i missing? is there some *specific*
username / group i need to add? or am i doing this completely
incorrectly?

i go to \\computera\c$, from computerb, just for the fun of it, and
there, i *am* prompted for a username and password. only problem here
is that the admin username / password i'm using on that computer don't
work. so what does work? i'm a little scared that there's a way to
access my files with a username / password combo i don't know. also,
how do i make \\computera\folder do this? as i said, i've tried
adding all the groups that seem the most obvious to me and none work.
so what does?

Did you enable sharing of the folder?
Did you map the shared folder on the remote computer?
The most likely cause of your problem is that you did not map the folder.

I use the "net" commands that you can access from the command line prompt.
Enter "net share ?" and "net use ?" for a comprehensive list of qualifiers.

Pchuck has a much more complete description of this process on his website.

Map it? You mean, go to Tools -> Map Network Drive, on computerb, and
setting the path to \\computera\folder? I'd prefer not to have it
mapped to a drive letter, however, when I tried it, just now, I was
still unable to do it. Here's the error I got:

[DriveLetter] is not accessible.

Access is denied.

It's still not prompting me for anything.

I didn't find it all that useful...

wizard did you do that from?
I didn't use a Wizard.

I right click on the folder I want to share and select Properties. I
click on the Sharing tab and check the Share this folder radio
button. I then click the Permissions button, Remove "Everyone" from
the "Group or user names" section and then "Add" "Admin Username".
Instead of reading the Activate section, read the Help section.

Make it work, using standard settings. Once it's working, identify what you
don't like, and change one thing at a time. When something breaks, change it
back. One change at a time.

I did read the help section. It hasn't yet helped, although I haven't
gotten past the "With XP Pro, there are a pair of Local Security
Policy lists, under User Rights Assignment." section, either (I'm not
so eager to run 15 different *.msc files, or whatever, only to find
out that I've been needing to do something else...)

Paranoia is good, when things are working. When you're trying to solve
problems, it's bad.

You say above "i delete the "Everyone" and add the admin username.". Which
wizard did you do that from?

Then we have "I'd prefer not to have it mapped to a drive letter ...".

What you've done is complicate your problems.

Instead of reading the Activate section, read the Help section.

have many causes, beginning with the network.

And if you add the password into your system:

Why don't you save the user & pass on the computer that wants to connect to
the other computer:

1. Go to control panel
2. Go to User Accounts
3. Click your User Account
4. Click Manage my network passwords and click add.
5. Under server, type the computer name you want to connect to.
6. Under User name, type \\computera\*THE-USER-NAME-YOU-USE*
7. Under Password, type the password
8. Open the folder again and see if it works

Let me know what happens

That looks promising! Doesn't seem to be working, quite yet, though.
Here's what I have on computerb:

Server: \\computera\folder
User name: username@WORKGROUP
Password: ...

I've also tried this to no avail:

Server: \\computera\folder
User name: computera\username@WORKGROUP
Password: ...

Something else I tried:

Server: \\computera\folder
User name: \\computera\username@WORKGROUP
Password: ...

This one yielded a "Windows cannot save the logon information. The
user name is not in the correct format or it contains characters that
are not valid" error.

Any ideas?

Oh - forgot to mention that I also tried the following usernames:

\\computera\username
username
computera\username
username@computera

The first yielded the same "user name doesn't contain valid characters
or is in a bad format" error. The second yielded an error message
saying the following:

Please retype your user name in one of the following formats:

username@domain (or username@workgroup or username@computername)
domain\username (or workgroup\username or computername\username)

The third and fourth usernames I tried didn't yield anything new (just
the same \\computera\folder is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource" error..
