Password protected network shared folder

I have a user on my network who wishes to share a folder on his personal
office machine with another office worker.

I have been told that I would have to first create an account on his machine
for the remote user, create a shared folder and then allow the new user
access to the folder.

Is there a way of creating a network shared folder that allows remote user
authenticated access, without having to create a new user on the local
machine?

Both machines are running Windows XP Professional.

Thanks in advance,

If this is an office environment this should NOT be done.
The file(s) should be shared on the server and access controlled by the Domain Account Share
Permissions and NTFS Permissions.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the prompt reply, any chance you could expand a bit on why this
should not be done, what are if any the security issues?

I should explain that we have a mixture of desktop machines running
different OSs, Mac, Sun Sparks and Intels running XP. Our network is
supported by Sun Solaris 10. We do not have any Windows servers supporting
our network.

Cheers,

Sandy

Unless your Sun Solaris can create SMB Shares then you will have to use Peer to peer
networking services to share files.
