password protected docs after reinstall

After reinstalling windows xp on another partition C, I am not able to
access files protected by a password on E partition. I am only able to
access the shared documents. I know the password but I have to chance to
type it in; I just get an error message saying that I can't open the files.

You mean you get the message "access denied"?
(Exact error messages are great troubleshooting tools.)
