Anyone know of a utility that will password protect a folder in XP?
I'm not going to use the encryption stuff that's built into XP, nor do
I need encryption at all. I just need to lock a folder from access
unless the correct password is entered. I've found a few utilities,
but they're all $$$.

You can download a freeware version of FolderAccess from

This is exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks, Gert!!! Much
appreciated.
How are the free and shareware versions different? Any experiences
with this free version?

Having just started using the program, I don't know anything about the
pro version. The freeware version is pretty straight forward. Open
the main program and you can select folders to lock from a dialog or
by dragging them into the window from Explorer. It also uses Explorer
shell extentions so you can right click on a folder and select "Lock",
enter a pass and it's done. Same deal to unlock. That's about it,
but that's about, no, *exactly* what I needed. I'm kind of curious
what other features the pro version offers, too.

Why not use whats built into the OS already? Or create a Zip file and
password that.

Because, once I login, the folders are decrypted without notice and I
don't want to bother with zipping. FolderAccess did the trick just
fine.

THats madness. You don't want to bother with the trouble of zipping yet
its less hassle than downloading, trying several programs, uninstalling
the ones that are no good?
