Password protect doc vs encrypt with password

Having read a bit about encryption options built into MS office, it seems I
can choose to just password protect a file using the tools > options >
security and then set password to open and/or modify a doc. I can also
use the advanced button and then choose an encryption type and check the tick
box to encrypt file properties.

In that both options are dependant upon a password I enter, is using the
encrypt file option (based upon a password I put in) anymore secure than just
password protecting the document ? Cracking the password in either case
would provide access to the document so Im struggling to see how encrypting
it makes it any more secure than password protecting it . Am I missing the
point here ?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

Yes. If someone were to get hold of your computer they could use a low
level scanning tool to read the bits and bytes on the disk. If the file is
encrypted those bits and byte are garbage. If the file is not encrypted the
thief may not be able to open it but they still can get meaningful data from
the scan.
