Password protect templates

I have created office templates in word and password protected them through
the Tools/Options/Security for modification. Now, when users try to open a
new document (file/new, template from my computer) from the template, they
get the password protect dialogue box, which confuses them. If they click
ready only, they can make changes and save regardless, as they've opened a
document.

Then, when they reopen an existing document created from the password
protected template, the dialogue box appears telling them the template is
reserved by me and it should be opened read only.

I don't want to use the protection feature for editing because it is not a
form, and also too much work. I just don't want them inadvertently opening a
template and modifying it.

How do I maintain the protection and get rid of annoying, confusing warning
messages?

User training is the sensible approach. Remove the protection and make
backups. Then if some clown wrecks a template, you can easily replace it.
Leave the users' normal.dot templates alone.
