Password Management

Where are 'remembered' passwords kept for Internet sites visited... you know,
when Windows asks you if you want it to remember the data? I have made it a
habit to delete all Temporary Internet Files (including Cookies), and still
have had the password auto-complete work just fine in Internet Explorer.
THEN I installed Webroot's "Window Washer" to do this automatically when
exiting IE. It works fine, but the passwords are lost. If passwords are
saved like Cookies, why does Window Washer delete them when a manual deletion
of these files did not? Or are the passwords saved somewhere else that
Window Washer has access to that I don't? Any ideas?

Hi,
Assuming Windows XP...
Website passwords are in this registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\SPW]

The cookie is necessary if you have checked the "Remember me" box on a
webpage. For IE's dropdown Autocomplete list, it's not.

Is there a clear passwords option in Window Washer? Deleting cookies and
clearing the IE cache (Temporary Internet Files) shouldn't clear
Autocomplete passwords.

Hope this helps,
Don

Don:

Thanks for the quick reply. I did find that Window Washer has a 'cookies
exception' list, and I have now added domains like Microsoft and eBay to
keep. HOWEVER, under that registry key you cited, there is no SPW entry,
only a "(Default)" with no value shown, and an "AskUser" with a 0 in the
Value Data box. Is this right?

Don, Window Washer is indeed deleting the entire \SPW folder. I'll see what
Webroot has to say about this. Thanks again, Jim
