password expired on AD cannot login using cached pw on laptop

Laptop user logs onto AD (W2K3) domain via VPN using cached login. This
works fine allowing user to access email and shares. User now logs off and
shuts down laptop.

The next day laptop users password on AD domain has expired (user ignored
password expiry warnings).

User logs on to his latop using his existing (old) cached password.
When user tries to access email or shares AD prompts for user name and
password becuase password has expired!
User need to change his password on ADC but cannot log on to do it.

Any ideas.

Have you tried connecting the laptop to the LAN? That should allow them to
change their password. You can also have them try logging on using dial up
networking at the ctrl+alt+del screen. They can choose the VPN connectoid
so that a connection to the domain is established before the user enters
credentials.
