can anyone help me... i have been given a desktop pc from work and it needs
formating. the problem i have is that i can not get onto the pc to do
anything. it requires a password to get onto windows and even when i try to
boot from disc it still asks for the password. i have asked for the login and
password nobody knows what it is .The person who previously used the pc was
sacked from my company and before he left he had changed the logon and
password and he will not tell anyone what it is....please help

Try the 'Administrator' account, the default for this account is no password
(blank).
To login enter Ctrl+Alt+Del twice.

If it's a CMOS password, just remove the battery for 5 or 10 minutes,
and try again.

If not, Try various curse words as the login. Maybe previous owner had
a grudge.

Example: ****u

Sounds like the BIOS is passworded. Go to the computer manufacturer's
website and look for instructions on how to reset the BIOS password.
Usually, this involves pulling the battery, or shorting a jumper on the
motherboard.

There are programs out there (free) that will change the built-in
Administrator password to nothing.

Have you tried to login using the built-in Adminsitrator account, already.
At the Welcome Screen, enter CTRL+ALT+DEL+DEL, enter Administrator, then OK
.... and see if you get in.

If not, then you will have to download a freeware program to erase the
password. Search for Reset Administrator SAM password.

Is this a BIOS password that is asked for even before windows starts or is
this the windows login account name if and password? Your description
makes it sound like the windows login. If that's the case you don't need to
login to windows to format and reinstall. Boot from the installation CD and
follow the prompts. Remember to delete the old partitions to get a clean
install. See this link for info on how to do a clean install.

If you need to login to do some things first try to login using the built in
Administrator account. For XP Pro at the Welcome screen do Ctrl-Alt-Del
twice, then enter Administrator as the name and the password for that
account which was assigned when the OS was installed. For XP Home that
password is normally blank. If for some reason the OS is XP Home boot into
safe mode. The Administrator account will show up on the Welcome Screen and
normally there is no password.

If it's XP Pro and you don't know the password for the Administrator account
use this password Utility to reset it.

You don't need to log in or know the Asministrator password to
perform a clean installation.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
