Password demanded on accessing shared folders

I've just set up a Win2000 Pro computer as a "file server"
in a peer2peer network of 12 win98SE machines. I used to
have a win98SE "file server" doing the same job, but to
allow some software to run had to change. I have shared
the folders and give all permissions, and each Win98
machine can see the "server" in network neighborhood, but
when trying to open the server the message You must supply
a password to make this connection appears and
Resource :\\FILESRV\IPC$ and a password field.

There was only the administrators password set on the
Win2000 machine when I set it up, but that does not work,
what is it asking for? can I change settings so it does
not ask for passwords as some young children will be using
the "workstations" and they will not remember these.

Thanks in anticipation.

You will need to add the user name (and password, if any is used) that is
used to log onto each of the Windows 98 PCs in your network, on the Windows
2000 box. Use the User tool in the Control Panel to add them.

If you want to access shared resource between Windows 98 and Windows 2k, you
need to use common username and password on both machines. Create an
account on 2k machine with a username and password and log on using that
username and password in Windows 98.

This way, Windows 98 won't asks for the password.

create usernames in the win2k servers from the computer
management snap in and you can accomplish is as suggested
by Richard..

in case you want a slightly complicated but elegant way,
then you can promote your win2k machine to being domain
controller by running the active directory server, then
you can ask each of your win98se machines to login to the
server. By doing this you can map all the shares to the
relevant user logins based on their login names. If you
have NTFS then you can set user rights and permissions as
well. Eventually you will end up with a full fledged file
server. It appears complicated but is very easy..if you
need help do let me know at (e-mail address removed)

If I may ask, how does one promote a Windows 2000 Professional computer to
Domain Controller?
