How can I encript and/or password a folder so others can not access the files
in the folder. The folder contains JPEG files.

Are the other users logging in as the same user as you (i.e. do you just
have a one-account machine) or does everyone have their own login? If
everyone has their own login you can use EFS on the folder to stop people
viewing the files, but if other people are in the same security context as
you then you'll have to use something like PGPDisk that comes with PGP
(www.pgp.com) which works very well.

If you are running your windows with different user acounts and the folder
located on NTFS formated drive, you can just change the permition to that
folder.

Just as an FYI, I haven't tried the first program, but the second program is
pretty much BS. Once you break the driver, the protection is gone. And
it's really very easy to do this. Also, that program is completely useless
in Safe mode in the trial, which pretty much makes it of no use. Try them
and see for yourself - Once the driver broke without me even intervening.

Encryption is far safer, but takes longer. XP's alternative is very good
though - If the operating conditions are met, that is.

Got it. Will remove link from my page.
How about this third one:

Hi,

The problem with all these software is basically that it is simply not doing
anything to the files. The files are intact in every respect, and somehow
if this driver based system breaks, then it's pretty much a field day for
who ever is trying to get in. The third one you recommended is similar to
the other two in the fact that it really does just what its name suggests.
A glorified way of applying hide attributes to a file.

However since encryption changes the file itself, unless you have the
password or private key (for XP Pro encryption) the files are useless even
if a user can see them. EFS was in fact created for this very purpose - The
permissions in XP can easily be circumvented by third party applications -
Which is why EFS was introduced in Win2K.

The software you are recommending is closer to the genre of permissions
*only*, except that it's even more unsafe. Hope you get what I'm trying to
say.

As an aside. Yes I do try these things myself before I ever post a link
or put a link on my page. However, with over 500 links to apps and
tutorials I dont go through a 110% rigourous process. That's why I trust
folks I that I trust...

any data that is highly sensitive should still be encrypted. "

No argument with that. It all depends on the level of protection you
need.

Like Win2K, WinXP's file security paradigm doesn't rely on, or
allow, the cumbersome method of password protection for individual
applications, files, or folders. Instead, it uses the superior method
of explicitly assigning file/folder permissions to individual users
and/or groups.

Of course, if you have WinXP Pro, you can encrypt the desired
files/folders.

As a crude work-around, if you actually prefer Win9x's way, you
can place the file in a compressed folder, and set a password to
uncompress the folder to view/access its contents.
