I posted this yesterday but I can't see it displayed. If some of you can see
it, my apologies.

My daughter has just bought a new PC with Windows XP Home SP2. She has asked
me if I know of a simple way to Password protect the computer. In other
words, as the machine boots, one needs to type in a common password to get
to the desktop. I could tell her in Win 98 but I'm not sure about XP.

TIA

Hi,

Please follow the steps provided below:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, click User Accounts.
3. In the User Accounts pane, click the account that you want to work with.
4. Under Related Tasks, click on assign new password.

The PC will prompt you to enter and confirm the password. You may then click
ok. The password is set. Next time, the PC will prompt you for a password.

Please click on the web link below to check how you can create password
reset disk in case you forget the password you typed in:

You may copy and paste the web link in the address bar of the Internet
explorer and check if clicking on the web link does not work

Hi,

Detlev has asked you to set pass word for BIOS. Concern is you will not be
able to boot the PC if you forget the pass word.

You will be able to set password reset disk if you set password in Windows
so that you may insert the disk and reset the password if you have forgotten
it.

You can also reset BIOS password, but you need to open the CPU tower and
remove and reseat the CMOS battery for this. You may set a BIOS password if
you are comfortable with this procedure. That is if you forget the password,
you will have to open the tower and discharge the CMOS battery.
