I am trying to install old hard drives in to a new bare bone system.
When I try to install XP the screen comes up saying setup is trying to load
windows. That screen stays there for a long time. Then I get the following
message.

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

....

Stop 0x00000050 (0xf9cbc4ab, 0x00000000, 0xf9cbc4ab, 0x00000000)

Partmgr.sys - address f9cbc4ab bas at f9cba000, datestamp 00000000"

Can anyone help me??

Hi, Jay.
I am trying to install old hard drives in to a new bare bone system.

As the primary master? As the boot device? Or as secondary drives? How
many drives; how big; how are they partitioned; what interface(s)...?
When I try to install XP...

Onto one of those drives as primary master?

You can see those drives; we can't, and you've told us nothing about them,
or about your mobo/chipset. Are they typical IDE drives? Or SCSI? How old
is "old"?

When installing WinXP onto a boot device for which drivers are not on the
WinXP CD-ROM, we have to watch for the invitation to press F6 to install
drivers for SCSI or other mass storage controllers. This happens very early
in Setup, as it is attempting to detect the hardware configuration so that
it will know what drivers and other components to install.

To add an additional drive to an existing system, usually all that is
necessary is to shut down, physically install it (with proper cables,
jumpers, etc.), and reboot. WinXP should detect its presence, then we use
Disk Management to take care of any partition creation, deletion, formatting
or drive letter assignments. In this case, the driver installation is
usually as easy as for a printer or other device.

I have 2 drives. An 80gig WD "C" as my primary master and a 30gig Maxtor
"D" as my slave both on ide 1. They are IDE drives.
The drives are about 3-4 years old as best I can remember. I created a
backup of the WD on the Maxtor which partitioned the Maxtor and created an
"F" drive. My boot sequence is floppy, harddrive,CD. The chipset is a VIA
KM400/ 8235CE. I am using 512 megs of DDR ram on 2 modules.
I know this should be easy, I've done it before, however this time I am
stumped.
Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Jay.

Thanks for the additional details. But I still don't know what you are
trying to do. :^{

I THINK you want to install WinXP onto your WD drive, then add the Maxtor as
a secondary drive. You want the 80 GB WD to be partitioned into 2 primary
partitions, named C: and D:. You want WinXP to be installed on C:. You
haven't indicated how big each partition should be, so I'll assume 30/50;
you can change it to what you want. There is nothing on the WD drive that
is not backed up or expendable. Is that about it? Then just...

Plug in the WD as primary master, being sure the cable and jumper settings
are correct and the BIOS is set to enable the IDE controller and recognize
the drive. Leave the Maxtor drive disconnected for now (or disable it in
the BIOS). Set your computer to boot from CD, insert the WinXP CD-ROM and
reboot. Follow the prompts on the screen, and let it (re)partition and
format Drive C:, using NTFS. Be sure to limit C: to 30 GB; otherwise, it
probably will include the whole 80 GB in a single partition! For now,
unless you want to install WinXP on D:, leave the rest of this HD
unformatted. After partitioning and formatting, let Setup continue to
install WinXP on the C: partition.

After WinXP is installed, be sure the firewall (built-in or third-party) is
activated and your favorite antivirus is installed and working. Go online
to Windows Update and be sure the latest Service Pack and any later
hotifixes are installed.

Then reboot into WinXP and enter Disk Management. (You haven't mentioned
Disk Management. I'm amazed that many users still haven't found this
excellent utility, more than 4 years after it first appeared in Win2K!) One
way is to enter at the Run prompt: diskmgmt.msc Be sure to study the Help
file reached from here; it explains a lot of things about hard drives and
file systems that users have been wondering for years. Make Disk Management
full screen and click View to set up the screen to suit yourself; I prefer
the Volume List at the top and the Graphical View at the bottom. At this
point, Disk Management should show your WD as Disk 0, with a single primary
partition of 30 GB and 50 GB unformatted. The single partition should be
labeled (System).

Using Disk Management, create the second partition on Disk 0 (the WD),
assign it drive letter D: and format it NTFS.

Then shut down, physically install the Maxtor as secondary master or primary
slave and reboot. Use Disk Management to be sure that it is shown as Disk 1
and that it contains a single primary partition, assigned drive letter F:.
Then, if you like, you can copy everything from F: to D: and
repartition/reformat the Maxtor to suit your future HD organization and,
optionally, copy data from D: back to F: (or whatever letter you choose to
use).

I'm still guessing where you want to end up, Jay. If I've guessed wrong,
please straighten me out. ;^}

Sorry, was not a Seagate but a WD :-)

Try to change the jumpers and put the disc as "Single" instead o
"Master
