I am already running Windows XP and would like to
Partition my drive without having to format the entire
drive. How do I do it?

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows XP installation, is to use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8
(www.powerquest.com).

Otherwise, a "clean install" will be required.

That's what I thought, but was hoping XP would have a
way to do it without a third party software.

Hi Jim,

As Carey mentions, you cannot do this non-destructively with the drive tools
supplied with Windows. You need to do this with third-party partitioning
utility. Here are several:

Partitioning programs:

BootIT NG www.terabyteunlimited.com
Partition Magic www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic
Partition Commander http://www.v-com.com/product/pc_ind.html
Ranish Partition Manager http://www.ranish.com/part/

Keep in mind that also relatively safe, any partition work carries with it
some potential for disaster. Please backup anything you do not wish to lose
to floppy or CD before employing any partitioning utility.

Using native Windows facilities, there is no way to change the
existing partition structure of your drive non-destructively. To
do so requires a third-party program such as Partition magic.

You need third party software. Either Partition Magic 8, or I would use
BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full
functional trial)
