Is the partition formatted as FAT32 or NTFS? What tool are you thinking
of using to resize the partition?

Depends on what you intend to do with that partition. FYI, right now, after
2 1/2 years of use, my Windows folder alone is almost 4GB.

If you're trying to separate OS & programs from data, consider what programs
you expect to install in the future. Without any details, I'd allow minimum
of 20GB for OS & programs - 40 is probably safer.

How big a drive do you have, and how many partitions do you want?

Resizing partition with XP on it, How large does it need to be?

Partition is NTFS, I'm using Acronis' Disk Director Suite.
Drive total is 40GB, I'm allotting 6.28gb to windows (C), which is currently
using 3.21gb of it, all the rest is to the (D) partition.(for programs and
data).

Personally, I'd go 10 to 15 GB for the OS/programs partition - leave
yourself some room to grow, and allow for all the various temp files,
caches, virtual memory file. If you need more data space, it's easier to
offload little used stuff to CD/DVD, or add another drive for data later.

You need to ask yourself what you are seeking to achieve by partitioning
the drive? Unless you decide to add a second hard drive I cannot
immediately see any significant benefits in partitioning?

Why was the drive originally partitioned?
