partition problem on dynamic disk

M

me

windows 2000 server sp4
create simple volume, 2gb, ntfs, drive w
shows healthy in disk management

however...

drive w doesn't show in explorer
right clicking w in disk management and selecting 'explore' produces: 'the
system cannot find the device specified'
properties shows empty (no drive size, file system unknown)

Did you format the volume from within Disk Management?

Is this a removable disk? Do you have other volumes on this disk? Is the
disk basic or dynamic? What does device manager say about the disk?

This is bizarre...

Anything in Event Viewer?

Is this repeatable? Can you delete the volume, create a new and format with
the same result?

no difference
deleted partition, created new one, formatted it, same error
'cannot find the specified device'

and nothing in the event logs...very strange

this is interesting...i can't access it locally but i can remotely.
it is shared normally as administrative share, and from a workstation i can
map to it and do what i want...but still inacessible locally.

More and more bizarre...

Can you access it locally with anything else than explorer? Command prompt,
for instance, or saving a notepad document?

What disk controller do you use? What size is your first partition? What is
the size of the disk?

Best regards

not gonna believe this one
i logged back in the server to try from the command prompt
drive shows in my computer now and trying to explore it shows the drive

whatever...

Heh...

The worst thing is those errors that show up, and then disappear. You never
know when it will come back...

Best regards
