Partition Magic

I just got a new notebook, with a 60 GB drive, running XP Pro. It came
partitioned with a 50 GB C partition, and a 10 GB D partition.

I want to make them approximately equal. I have Partition Magic 7, which I
used on my desktop (XP Home) 2 years ago, to partition the single 120 GB
drive into 2 60's. And I don't feel like springing for PM 8, if I can help
it.

Since PM 7 worked OK back then, what's chances that it will do the job now?

I assume that Windows itself can't handle doing the job, or can it?

The D drive apparently has about 1 GB of stuff on it, that I didn't put
there. So, I don't want to lose that.

NEW QUESTION: The Acer notebook came with a 3 CD recovery set. If/when I
should even need to use this, do recovery sets do anything to the partition
setup, or just accept what's there?

In just about every case, a computer manufacturer's Recovery CD
will return the hard drive to its original factory configuration,
which includes repartitioning it. In your case, I would advise
against changing any current partition structure.

PM will handle what you want to do, however be aware that
ny time you mess with the primary partition, you will most
likely end up haveing to do a repair installation, or a
complete reinstall, if you want to keep your data, make
backups of your system before you do anything.
Don't depend on system restore to backup your data, it
only keeps system info.

Ron:

I use PM v7.01 via floppy boot on XP Pro portables and desktops with any
problems.

Hi Ron,

I used PM7 to repartition computers at work. They are
Dell systems that came with only one partition. I had to
create a boot CD instead of the boot disks that PM7 uses.
I have had no problems using the boot CD to repartition
the HHD. Just make sure you defrag your hard drives
before you use PM7 though.

I would strongly advise you NOT to mess with these partitions unless you are
sure the contents of D: aren't needed for the recovery/reinstall. A lot of
OEM recovery systems use pretyy generic recovery/OS CDs, with drivers and
bundled s/w in a hidden/2nd partition on the HDD.

If you're not sure, then check with the manufacturer BEFORE doing anything.
If it does mess the recovery up - you probably wont know about it untill you
really need it!
